From Chamonix, the famous little red rack and pinion train of Montenvers will take you in only twenty minutes, climbing the 1000m of elevation, to one of the most famous sites of the Mont Blanc: The Mer de Glace (Sea of Ice). This is the 3rd largest glacier in the Alps and the first French glacier, consisting of 3 smaller ones, it stretches over 7km and is more than 200m thick.

Since 1946, The Montenvers is also known for its famous ice grotto that is re-excavated each year in the side of the glacier due to the melting of the ice. Many rooms are created with many sculptures and ice scenes.

The Compagnie du Mont Blanc is in charge of this site and you will find on their site all the necessary information for your adventure.
